This teapot is a unique collaboration between two expert artisans. Crafted from black clay by Hirotaka Umehara, a traditional Tokoname ware craftsman, it is then hand-painted with overglaze by Kutani Ware painter Tamura Tsugumori.
Tokoname ware (常滑焼) is a traditional Japanese pottery technique from Aichi Prefecture, with a history dating back to the 12th century, and celebrated for its high quality and functionality.
Handmade with care, this teapot includes a built-in cera-mesh ceramic tea strainer. The honeycomb-shaped strainer features fine holes that keep leaves inside the pot, allowing the flavors and aroma of the tea to develop fully. Its design accommodates a wide range of teas, from light-steamed to deep-steamed varieties, while the comfortable handle ensures ease of use during every pour.
Kutani ware (九谷焼) is a traditional style of Japanese porcelain that originated in the 17th century in Kutani Village, located in what is now Ishikawa Prefecture. It’s celebrated for its bold use of color, intricate designs, and artistic flair, often considered among Japan’s most decorative and painterly ceramics.
The teapot’s design features meticulously painted blue dots across its surface, complemented by delicate white sakura blossoms. A gold-colored karakusa pattern winds gracefully around the body, creating a beautiful teapot that reflects the artistry of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
