Traditional Japanese tenugui are typically finished with raw, unsewn edges—a traditional feature unique to tenugui.
Leaving the edges unsewn not only makes them dry quickly and keeps them hygienic, but also offers the practical advantage of being able to easily tear them apart for use when needed. This stems from the fact that tenugui have long been used for a variety of purposes in daily life.
When you first start using it, the edges may fray slightly, but simply trim any loose threads with scissors, and it will be fine. Furthermore, the fraying will naturally subside with repeated washing and use.
