A shiboridashi is a handleless teapot, traditionally used for high-grade, large-leaf Japanese teas like gyokuro or sencha. Its wide, shallow form and snug-fitting lid allow precise control over pouring and temperature, preserving the tea’s aroma and flavor. Unlike a standard kyūsu teapot with a side handle, the shiboridashi offers an intimate, tactile experience, perfect for mindful, small-batch brewing.

Made from Tokoname clay, this teapot continues a tradition that stretches back over a thousand years. Tokoname City, one of Japan’s Rokkoyō, or Six Ancient Kilns, is celebrated for its iron-rich clay, smooth texture, and natural tones that enhance the taste and warmth of tea. Across the Six Ancient Kilns, from Shigaraki to Bizen, each region has cultivated its own distinctive style, forming the backbone of Japanese ceramic artistry.

This Sakura Shiboridashi was handmade by Hirotaka Umehara, the Second Gyokko, a distinguished Traditional Craft Artisan born in 1946. Awarded the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays, and multiple regional honors, Umehara’s work is defined by precision, comfort, and subtle beauty. Techniques such as hikamae, which brings out kiln-induced variations, and nota, creating a soft, skin-like texture, give each teapot a tactile charm. Every lid fit, every curve, and every surface detail reflects decades of devotion to the art of tea.
