Bring Japanese fashion history into the everyday: This upcycled tote is made from antique kimono fabric, once woven with care by Kyoto artisans yet never cut and sewn into a garment.
Its story begins in Muromachi, the heart of Kyoto’s kimono trade since the Edo period. For centuries, the district’s textile merchants thrived, supplying exquisite bolts of fabric across Japan. But as lifestyles shifted and kimono wearing became rare, countless rolls of fine cloth—many dating from the 1970s—were left to rest quietly in storehouses. The Muromachi Gofukuro Project was born from the idea of reviving these forgotten textiles, transforming them into new forms with beauty and purpose.
Each tote is cut from kimono fabric once displayed in shops or preserved in warehouses, showcasing distinctive patterns and bold, timeless designs seldom seen today. These textiles reflect the dedication of craftsmen who spared no effort in their weaving, capturing the spirit of Japan from the Showa to Heisei eras. Light yet durable, the fabric carries both refinement and resilience, making every piece unique—an accessory that resonates with cultural memory while fitting seamlessly into modern life.
Approximate size: 32 × 34 cm
Please note: Each tote is handmade using vintage kimono fabric. Variations in color, weave, and design occur, depending on where the fabric is cut. To care for your bag, brush off light dirt; for deeper stains, consult a professional cleaner. Avoid overloading or carrying sharp/heavy items.
