Embrace the art of slow tea brewing with this Shiboridashi teapot, a vessel designed for those who cherish the quiet ritual of tea.
A shiboridashi is a handleless teapot used primarily for delicate, large-leaf Japanese teas such as gyokuro and high-grade sencha. Unlike standard kyūsu teapots with handles, it features a wide, shallow body and a lid that doubles as a fine strainer, allowing for precise control over pouring and temperature. This minimalist design enhances aroma and mouthfeel, offering a brewing experience both intimate and meditative.
Crafted from Tokoname clay, this piece continues the legacy of one of Japan’s Rokkoyō, or the Six Ancient Kilns, a lineage of pottery traditions that have flourished for over a thousand years. Situated along the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture, Tokoname City is celebrated for its rich iron-bearing clay, natural hues, and smooth finish, all of which contribute to the teapot’s warm, tactile charm and ability to enhance the flavor of tea.
This shiboridashi was handmade by Hirotaka Umehara, known as the Second Gyokko, a nationally recognized Traditional Craft Artisan. Born in 1946, Umehara has received numerous honors, including the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Silver Rays. His work is distinguished by techniques such as hikamae, which creates subtle kiln variations, and nota, a process that gives the surface its soft, skin-like texture. Every curve, every lid fit, and every line reflects his lifelong pursuit of comfort and precision, hallmarks of true Gyokko craftsmanship.
Lightweight yet substantial, this Tokoname shiboridashi combines timeless tradition with ease of use, bringing the gentle spirit of Japanese tea culture to every cup.
